Airtel has launched SMS 2.0, which is being promoted as the first ever upgrade for the conventional SMS.

It will offer this innovative service to its 55 million customers in India in partnership with Affle, a leading mobile media company which invented the upgrade.

SMS 2.0 improves upon the messaging format by allowing users to compose messages using different kinds of texts, background colours and smileys.

It also blends together messages and ads and delivers exclusive content depending on the user's area of interest. The content, delivered as teasers, would include news, jokes, movie updates, cricket and astrological predictions.

Airtel subscribers can download SMS 2.0 freely by sending "SMS2" to 543210
